Robin Becker an artist, whose work invites the viewer to inhabit an imaginary space or moment...

"Here to There" Series:

'Coolie'Ellis Island, New York', mixed media collage, 30 x 24 inches.

"Here to There" is inspired by historical and contemporary stories of immigration. I photographed the remarkable window-lit interiors of the Ellis Island Hospital, that is something of a modern archeological ruin. I found the site to be alive and profound, leading me to a fascination with the immigrant experience and the search for the "American Dream.” I searched my family archives and combined those photos with my own panoramic photo-assemblages of the hospital. The incomparable light evokes time and memory; revealing rooms where these people look out at us or sometimes appear floating, ghost-like, and suggests their unknown but universal story.

"Unexpected Clothing" Series

'Paper Dresses' Vancouver, Canada', mixed media collage, 30 x 24 inches.

"Unexpected Clothing" depicts clothes from all over the world, refracted by light and reflected street images. The "empty" garments imply an opportunity for the viewer to place themselves in the picture surrounded by beauty, or to step into another time and perhaps remake one's own image. These works focus on a person’s choice of self-perception and their own beauty.

"Illuminating Passages" Series:

'Paris Journey' Paris France', mixed media collage, 24 x 30 inches.

“Illuminated Passageways” evokes the feeling of an empty space waiting for an inhabitant. I am particularly drawn to architecture that awakens an emotional or psychological space with shafts of light, indirect light, reflected light, or bounced light.
